Solar 4 R School project • Ola, Idaho (Ola Elementary School)

SYSTEM DETAILS: grid-tied, ground-mounted solar PV system with tracker

PROJECT NOTES: We’ll admit it—this is our favorite project photo to date. When we completed this system, the entire student body, faculty, and staff of the one-room school in the small Idaho mountain town of Ola proudly posed in front of the tracker. This is the only grid-tied, ground-mounted solar tracker installed for the Solar 4 R Schools program in the nation. We proposed the change because the school’s metal roof was getting lightning strikes in the summer, making it unsuitable for a roof-mounted system.

This is one of ten 1 kW solar PV systems Solar Cascade installed on school grounds throughout Idaho as part of the Idaho Power’s Solar 4 R Schools program, which is part of a nationwide solar for schools program. This program includes a curriculum for teaching about renewable energy; and the web-based monitoring system allows kids to see how much energy is being produced by their school’s solar PV system.
